MALES vs FEMALES
Male Or Female Yorkshire Terrier Puppy
A dog will influence and change your life forever therefore, it is extremely important to choose carefully the right type of dog for you. Some important factors to remember of the puppy are his or her size, the care involved and the time you can dedicate to this care. That is not all; however, the puppy’s temperament is extremely important as well and that is mostly influenced by the gender. You need to be aware of the differences between the male and female Yorkshire Terrier before you can decide which one is right for you.
People often wonder which is better, male or female. I have heard it said females will behave in a “Love Me, Love Me, Love Me!” way and males will behave in an “I Love You!” way. My experience with Yorkies has been exactly that. I have also found that the male wants to be wherever I am in the house; he is more attached to me, the female of the house. The females will immediately come to me for attention when I sit down, but are not as concerned that they be wherever I am in the house the way the male is.
When it comes to dominance, females usually rule. It’s like the saying goes: “If mama isn’t happy, no one’s happy.” Dogs are “pack” animals. Female Yorkies normally determine the pecking order and maintain control of the pack. Because of this they tend to be more independent, stubborn, and territorial at times. If two dogs are going to fight, it is usually two females involved. Since females puppies are more dominant, my experience has been that the males tend to be less assertive and usually display a less confident attitude.
When it comes to training of all forms, males tend to be more easily distracted, but females tend to be more stubborn. Yorkies tend to be a bit more difficult to train and may take longer then some other breeds. All Yorkies need consistency in training to master house breaking, and other commands. If you can be consistent and give praise or rewards for good behaviour you will have better results more quickly with your new puppy. Having a male puppy neutered by about 6 months of age will help keep him from marking (urinating) all through your home as they have a lower testosterone level. Both sexes have their little quirks, but either sex is wonderful to have.
